The Camp takes place in the beautiful and abundant trails located in the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, Sleepy Hollow, NY.
IN YEARS PAST, WE MET AT THE SLEEPY HOLLOW HIGH SCHOOL, AND JOGGED INTO THE TRAILS. STARTING THIS YEAR, DROP-OFF and PICK-UP (and general parking for those staying), WILL BE ALONG SLEEPY HOLLOW ROAD – THERE IS PLENTY OF PARKING AND PROVIDES EASY ACCESS TO THE TRAILS. IT’S A SHORT JOG/DRIVE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOOL, ALONG WEBBER AVENUE, TO SLEEPY HOLLOW ROAD. YOU WILL SEE ALL THE CARS PARKED THERE.
WE MADE THIS CHANGE DUE TO THE GROWING NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS, AND FELT IT WAS EASIER, AND SAFER, FOR ALL.
WHO ARE OUR ATHLETES
Our Camp is designed for runners of all abilities, ranging in age from 10 years to the collegiate level, who want to be properly prepared for their upcoming seasons. Athletes are placed into different groups, depending upon their level of ability and comfort, with at least 1 coach joining each group throughout the entirety of their workout. As the athlete’s comfort and fitness levels improve, we may move them to a more appropriately challenging group.
We take great pride in the diversity of our athletes and coaches. We believe this diversity sets our Camp apart from other running camps, and provides an unmatched experience for our young athletes.
Last summer we were joined by 90 young runners, representing 40 different schools.
WHO ARE OUR COACHES
For 4 weeks this summer, you will have the opportunity to be trained by some of the best coaches and runners in our area. Many of our Camp coaches hail from various parts of Africa ~ the Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya. The strength and depth of our coaching staff allows for constant coach-athlete interaction, and even the strongest collegiate runners will have someone to pace them through their workouts.
Mike Barnow, Camp Director. Mike is the Coach and Founder of the Westchester Track Club, which was founded in 1973. The Westchester Track Club is one of only 30 U.S. Track and Field Elite Development Clubs in the nation. Mike has coached Olympic and World Championship runners, Nationally-ranked runners, and numerous exceptional to ordinary runners of all ages. The entire coaching staff is comprised of current or past athletes of Mike’s.
Kate O’Hern Lyons, Camp Director. While an athlete of Mike’s, Kate qualified for and competed in the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, in New Orleans, in the 1500m track event. Kate’s PR in the 1500 is 4:16 and on the roads, Kate’s best 5k time is 16:10. Kate was a 7-time Ivy League Champion, and is a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Kassahun Kabiso ~ From Ethiopia, Kassahun has won 7 marathons, including the Pittsburgh Marathon. He has twice been named NYRR Athlete of the Year, and was named Athlete of the Decade. With five top-20 finishes in the NYC Marathon, Kassahun is easily one of the area’s top runners.
Abiyot Endale ~ Abiyot was a member of Ethiopia’s gold-medal winning team in the 2003 World XC Championships. Among his numerous top finishes, Abiyot won the San Francisco Half-Marathon in 2009, and boasts PRs of 7:45 in the 3K and 13:25 in the 5K. Abiyot has been NYRR Athlete of the Year for his age group.
Harbert Okuti ~ Hailing from Uganda, Harbert placed 15th at this past Boston Marathon with a time of 2:24.46. At the highly competitive 2014 Boston ½ Marathon, Harbert placed 7th in a time of 1:03. Harbert was 3rd at the 2012 U.S. National 5k Road Championship in a time of 14:03 and 2nd in the Open 2-mile at the 2012 Millrose Games.
Mathew Kiplagat ~ Mathew is a 2007 Iona College graduate and is from Kenya. He ran his first marathon in 2012, running a 2:17 for 2nd place and just recently came in 4th place at Grandmas Marathon with a PR of 2:12.09.
Joseph Ekoum ~ Joseph, from Kenya, is currently one of the best Masters road racers in the country, having been ranked #2 Nationally as a Masters Road Racers in 2012.
Grant Sheely ~ Grant was a standout runner at Dobbs Ferry High School, and just finished his first year at Oberlin College, where he is a member of their XC and T&F teams. Grant attended several years of the WTC Summer Running Camp!
Additional Elite Runners who will join us throughout the Camp and who we have seen in years past!:
Million Wolde, Ethiopia. Million is the 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 5000m, and Silver Medalist in the 2001 World Championships.
Tekeye Gebreslassie ~ Tekeye is a former member of the Ethiopian National Team, representing his country in both the ½ Marathon and Marathon events. Elite running certainly ‘runs’ in Tekeye’s family, as his younger brother is Olympic Gold Medalist Haille.
We strongly encourage the Coaches, Parents, Guardians of our young athletes to join us during our training sessions, of course free of charge. The more support surrounding these young athletes, the better!
OUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Coach Mike’s injury-averse coaching style is as inspiring as it is effective, and it applies equally well to the beginner runner as it does to Mike’s Elite athletes.
Our program is “progressive,” meaning that we don’t immerse our athletes into intense workouts or mileage in 1 week. Instead, we work with each athlete, over 5 weeks, tailoring the appropriate running program that will result in each of them being fully prepared for their upcoming seasons.
Though we strongly recommend attending as much of the entire 4-week program as is possible, we do understand that these young athletes have additional summer commitments, and may not be able to attend the Camp in its entirety.
Athletes can attend sessions by the day or by the week. The fee for each session is $25.
Sibling Discount – $20 per session, per athlete, for those families with more than 1 runner!
Sessions can be used anytime during the 4 weeks. There will be several opportunities for ‘make-ups’.
We welcome all, so please let us know if financial assistance is needed; we’ll make it work!
Payments can be made when the athlete arrives to Camp or in advance – in cash or by check.
