Summer Running Camp

WHO ARE OUR ATHLETES

Our Camp is designed for runners of all abilities, ranging in age from 10 years to the collegiate level, who want to be properly prepared for their upcoming seasons.  Athletes are placed into different groups, depending upon their level of ability and comfort, with at least 1 coach joining each group throughout the entirety of their workout.  As the athlete’s comfort and fitness levels improve, we may move them to a more appropriately challenging group.

We take great pride in the diversity of our athletes and coaches.  We believe this diversity sets our Camp apart from other running camps, and provides an unmatched experience for our young athletes.

WHO ARE OUR COACHES

For 4 weeks this summer, you will have the opportunity to be trained by some of the best coaches and runners in our area.  Many of our Camp coaches hail from various parts of Africa ~ the Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya ~ as well as from the local Westchester area.  The strength and depth of our coaching staff allows for constant coach-athlete interaction, and even the strongest collegiate runners will have someone to pace them through their workouts.

Mike Barnow, Camp Director.  Mike is the Coach and Founder of the Westchester Track Club, which was founded in 1973.  The Westchester Track Club is one of only 30 U.S. Track and Field Elite Development Clubs in the nation.  Mike has coached Olympic and World Championship runners, Nationally-ranked runners, and numerous exceptional to ordinary runners of all ages.  The entire coaching staff is comprised of current or past athletes of Mike’s.

Kate O’Hern Lyons, Camp Director. While an athlete of Mike’s, Kate qualified for and competed in the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, in New Orleans, in the 1500m track event. Kate’s PR in the 1500 is 4:16 and on the roads, Kate’s best 5k time is 16:10. Kate was a 7-time Ivy League Champion, and is a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Harbert Okuti ~  Uganda
Ugandan World Junior Cross Country team.
Iona College graduate
PRs include:
Mile: 4:03
Half Marathon: 1:03
Marathon 2:16 at the 2018 NYCM for 16th place overall

Lindsey Scherf ~ USA
American Jr. Record Holder 10K. (32:51)
3 time member US National Team at World Cross Country Championships

Kassahun Kabiso ~ Ethiopia Kassahun has won 7 American marathons, including the Pittsburgh Marathon. He has twice been named NYRR Athlete of the Year, and was named Athlete of the Decade 2000-2009, with five top-20 finishes in the NYC Marathon.

Additional Elite Runners who nay join us at the Camp and who we have seen in years past!:

Million Wolde, Ethiopia. Million is the 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 5000m, and Silver Medalist in the 2001 World Championships.

Tekeye Gebreslassie ~ Tekeye is a former member of the Ethiopian National Team, representing his country in both the ½ Marathon and Marathon events. Elite running certainly ‘runs’ in Tekeye’s family, as his younger brother is Olympic Gold Medalist Haille.

We strongly encourage the Coaches, Parents, Guardians of our young athletes to join us during our training sessions, of course free of charge. The more support surrounding these young athletes, the better!

OUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Coach Mike’s injury-averse coaching style is as inspiring as it is effective, and it applies equally well to the beginner runner as it does to Mike’s Elite athletes.

Our program is “progressive,” meaning that we don’t immerse our athletes into intense workouts or mileage in 1 week.  Instead, we work with each athlete, over 4 weeks, tailoring the appropriate running program that will result in each of them being fully prepared for their upcoming seasons.

Though we strongly recommend attending as much of the entire 5-week program as is possible, we do understand that these young athletes have additional summer commitments, and may not be able to attend the Camp in its entirety.

CAMP FEES

Athletes can attend sessions by the day or by the week.  The fee for each session is $25.

Sibling Discount – $20 per session, per athlete, for those families with more than 1 runner!

Sessions can be used anytime during the 4 weeks.  There will be several opportunities for ‘make-ups.’

We welcome all, so please let us know if financial assistance is needed; we’ll make it work!

Payments can be made when the athlete arrives to Camp or in advance – in cash or by check.

Please make checks payable to:  Westchester Track Club
