Several of the club’s full time athletes have made a mark on the professional road race circuit this Spring. Coming off foot surgery and a long layoff, Lindsey Scherf has put together a string of very good races. Her last 2 have been her best so far, finishing 6th and 2nd American in a race with 50,000 finishers at the Lilac Bloomsday 12k in Spokane (5/6/12) and coming back this week with perhaps her best road race performance ever, finishing 2nd at the US National 25K Championship in Grand Rapids Michigan. Hellen Jemutai, one of our Kenyan athletes based in Durham, N.C. and managed by Ben Kurgat, was first at the Pike’s Peek 10K (4/29/12) in a personal best time of 32:54 and last week was the winner of the Apple Valley 10K in Winchester VA. Also racing there, Deresse Deniboba was the men’s winner in his 2nd race after a 2 month layoff because of a stress fracture. Julius Kogo, also based in Durham, was first at the Pike’s Peek 10K in a fast 28:12 with Abiyot Endale 2nd in 28:16, a personal best. Abiyot was again 2nd racing this week at the highly competitive Newport 10K in Jersey City. Harbert Okuti has been training at altitude in Morocco for the past 6 weeks at a training camp run by one of my friends and is due back in about 10 days. I am looking forward to the above athletes and several others continuing to improve as the races get hotter.
