IN MEMORIUM — JOHN SCHERF

John Scherf, a long time member of the Westchester Track Club, passed away this morning (Sat. July 24) after fighting bone cancer the past several months. My condolences to his wife Susan, and to his 2 daughters Lauren and Lindsey. John was an incredibly enthusiastic runner who improved throughout his 40's and 50's and in the past several years he also became an historian of U.S. distance running. This was in part fueled, I believe, by Lindsey's successes as she moved up the ladder of U.S. distance rankings. I will dearly miss John's 3 page single spaced e-mails attempting to handicap a collegiate event that Lindsey was entered in and his voice mails that he left me each week: "Mike, this is John Scherf, I have a quick question to ask you." I would have to decide if I had 1 1/2 hours before dinner time and I usually opted to call him back post dinner when I had sufficient calories in my body.

John leaves so many good friends from the club and sometime in the near future I hope to get together with Susan, Hans, Bill, Denis and the rest to celebrate and share our memories of him.
